Cruise Ship Sinking, Rafelia II Ferry Sinks Bali Strait 72 Passengers Aboard Five Dead

On Friday, March 34, 2016 around 1300 hours, PT Darma Bahari Utama's LCT Rafelia II, a 65 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry sank in Bali Strait with 72 passengers aboard. Forty-eight passenger were rescued with two dozen passengers missing.

Rafelia II lost stability and began to roll over on its starboard side, sinking near the Ketapang harbor in the waters of Banyuwangi District, East Java, after allegedly leaving port knowing it had suffering hull breach. The ferry was transporting dozens of heavy trucks, cars, 72 passengers and 14 crew, according to police.

Passengers and crew jumped overboard and were rescued from the sea by local fishermen. Search and Rescue (SAR) team continued to search for the missing victims throughout the day.

Indonesia's transportation ministry revoked the operating license of the ferry owner Darma Bahari Utama.

Those who died had become trapped in the sinking ferry. Five bodies were recovered, including a mother and her infant child.
